Weblog Topic: Why is web design important to my design career?
Web is everywhere. Any company or brand that really has a name, or wants to create one, in the profit world has a website. Therefore, as a graphic designer, I need to know how to make a website for my future clients. This will also broaden my skills and will be in higher demand and stand out among my competitors.
Honestly, I really didn’t want to take this class and wanted to avoid the whole web design thing to someone else. But, just the first class was an eye opener and am definitely changing my mind (mostly because there’s no HTML) and Dreamweaver is much easier than I thought. I just didn’t want web design to take away from my other concepts and ideas even though it’s an extension of it. I found it complicated and didn’t want to deal with it. But that’s just my laziness talking. It’s a work in progress to change.

Yeah, I wasn’t sure about this class either. I’m a visual person and writing code to me is like pulling teeth, but I can see the importance of knowing how to build a site. If a client wants a site in addition to other print medium or anything else, it’ll be good to be able to say, “Yeah…I can do that.” I think it’ll be kinda tedious work at first, but as we see everything come together, it might just be pretty cool.

Good reflecting here, and I especially appreciate the honest appraisal of “web design” an your wanting to “turn it off”. This kind of reflection shares your thoughts and ideas and lets me understand you and more able to work with you to facilitate what you need from this course. I was especially taken with your statement that “I just didn’t want web design to take away from my other concepts and ideas even though it’s an extension of it”. That is a strong feeling and a valid one, yet only in your mind and emotions. You are able to state that fear and strength as well as be open to “progress to change”. I know that takes a lot of energy and guts to admit and to counter! Let me know anyway that I can help facilitate your progress.

I am sure glad we are learning Dreamweaver, because it is now an Adobe tool that can be incorporated with the other programs in that suite.
We’re not computer science majors! Hahaha

I admit it is very intimidating to walk into a web design class, but like you said it is a very useful skill. I’m sure if we study hard enough and really focus we’ll be more interested in furthering the skill and more excited to use it.

This whole web design thing really freaks me out too, but I have the same thought when I realized it was going to be a lot easier than I had originally intended. The only thing we can do from here to is understand we are all intermediate and that we really need to use each other as crutches and references to really make things easier.
